Our mission is to empower homeless Veterans by providing essential care packages, connecting them to critical resources, and advocating for long-term housing solutions.
It reflects broader systemic inequities in housing, healthcare, and economic stability. Black Veterans experience homelessness at disproportionately higher rates in comparison to their White counterparts, despite having served in the military and being eligible for veteran-specific services (National Alliance to End Homelessness [NAEH], 2023). Structural factors, including racial discrimination in housing markets, employment disparities, and challenges accessing VA benefits, exacerbate their vulnerability to homelessness (Tsai & Rosenheck, 2015).
Research shows that Black Veterans face additional barriers when attempting to secure stable housings due to systemic racism, criminal justice involvement, and mental health or substance use disorders that go untreated (Montgomery et al., 2021). Addressing homelessness among Black veterans is not only a moral imperative but also a strategic necessity for ensuring racial equity in veteran services and improving long-term outcomes for those who served their country.

Annie B’s Serenity Center is a 501 (C)(3) non profit organization founded by Kianna M. Laing, an Army Veteran, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and advocate for homeless veterans. Having served as a medic and later worked as a social worker in the HUD VASH program, she witnessed firsthand the struggles that Veterans of color and marginalized groups face in securing stable housing and support.
Named in honor of her grandmother, Annie B., this nonprofit embodies the values of compassion, resilience, and advocacy.
